Things to See and Do in Burra

Burra is a great living museum of mining and nineteenth century history. It has been called 'An Historic Copper Town and the Merino Capital of the World.' In fact two sheperds established the town in 1845 and it grew to a population of 5,000 by the mid nineteenth century as copper mining took hold of the area. So many historic sites remain that Burra was declared a South Australian Heritage Town in 1994.

Around the town you really get to see how the miners and other residents of Burra used to live. You can visit the Miners Dugouts in Blyth Street, literally dug out of the embankments along the Burra Creek, in the 1840s as basic accommodation for the many miners flocking to Burra. Malowen Lowarth and other traditional cottages are located on Paxton Square. The Burra Market Square Museum is just off Market Street with displays showing an old time family home, post office and general store complete with original furnishings and fittings.

Burra's unique Heritage Passport allows the visitor access to 43 of these historic sites, including the Monster Mine area, Redruth Gaol and the underground Unicorn Brewery cellars. The Old Redruth Gaol was a featured location in the popular Australian Movie 'Breaker Morant' and these days they give you a key to get in! Its cells remain very much as they were in 1856.

Other places of interest include the Burra Mine Site and Powder Magazine, the Bon Accord Mine Complex, various antique shops, Apple Cider Cellars and the local Art Gallery. For a round of golf, visit the local Burra Golf Club with it's 18-hole golf course with watered fairways, situated close by on the Barrier Highway or take a drive out to explore the Clare Valley vineries. Be sure to visit the Burra Market Days, held on the first full weekend of each month.

Special events in Burra include the annual Jailhouse Rock rock n' roll weekend in February, Jazz in the Monster Mine where folks chill out within the 80 metre high walls of the Burra Mine Pool, and the Antique Fair with bargains. entertainment, cider tastings and live bands, all of which are very popular with locals and tourists alike.
