Norseman is also home to Australia's richest quartz reef, which is still being mined today. Legend has it that the town got its start in the late 1800s when prospector Laurie Sinclair's horse, Hardy Norseman, unearthed a big nugget while pawing the ground, which was later pegged as a substantial reef. A bronze statue of the horse stands on the corner of Roberts and Ramsay Streets just down from the Visitor Centre.

Things to See and Do in Norseman

Norseman has a number of attractions including Phoenix Park, a working gold mine just off Mines Road in the centre of Norseman at the top of which there is a lookout point with a view across the Nullarbor. For those who like Gemstone Fossicking you can get a permit and directions from the Visitor Centre to search for attractive agate gemstones in the peaceful bushland a short distance from town.

The Norseman Historical Collection features an interesting display of local memorabilia which focuses on household and mining equipment from the period 1894 to 1920.

The 'Corrugated Iron Camels' on Prinsep Street are brilliant life size replicas that pay tribute to the camel trains that carried all the freight and mail in the early days. Norseman has very wide streets because the camel trains needed lots of room to turn.

A spectacular view awaits those visitors who take the short 2km drive up to Beacon Hill. One can see in every direction and be regaled with history from the display boards on the quaint information hut that perches at the top. You can also enjoy a short walk trail through the beautiful bushland that leads off the top of the hill and comes back to the top.

Five kilometres from Norseman you will find Mount Jimberlana, which provides excellent views of the area for those prepared to climb its rocky slopes in the early morning or late afternoon. Be sure to drop in at the Eucla Weather Station, as it too has panoramic views from the top of the escarpment. Lake Cowan and Lake Dundas are also favourite 'must see' destinations.

For people heading east across the Nullarbor Plain it is essential to stop at the Norseman Visitor's Centre in Roberts Street (signposted off the Eyre Highway) where you will find invaluable up-to-date information on accommodation, water, credit cards, food, fuel and other facilities at all the major stopover points on the route. Norseman is the last major town before heading east with last supplies of fresh water.

Finding Us

Norseman is the gateway to Western Australia, on the Eyre Highway 200 kilometres from Kalgoorlie, 200 kilometres from Esperance and 725 kilometres from Perth.

The Norseman Great Western Motel is centrally located on the main highway next to the Caltex Roadhouse. If entering Norseman from the Eyre Highway (entering from the East) turn left at the 'T' junction and travel in a southerly direction for approximately one kilometer, turn right into the Great Western Motel at the sign that says Great Western Travel Village.
